Cassie Logan Went to a segregated school which means that children are separated from others on the basis of race. This is why the black children in the novel went to The Great Faith School. (Jefferson Davis was the president of the Confederate States when the southern part of the United States seceded from the rest of the country during the Civil War). As late as 1954, when the Supreme Court voted to end segregation, 17 states and the District of Columbia still separated black and white students. This meant that 4 out of every 10 students in the United States went to segregated schools.
